Thanks for sharing this, Dick. Wow, those lyrics are strong. And a great production too! It's fascinating how many of us feel this way, especially when we don't judge others so harshly but feel this great sense of shame about our own bodies.
Aw thanks Alia - really appreciate the kind words. Yeah it is fascinating - the critique of the self is always so much harsher, so much more visceral. Of course, we know how to hurt ourselves the most, cause we know ourselves so well. We know every unhealed wound to pick at. Trauma's a helluva critic huh. And of course it doesn't help that capitalism prefers us to hate our bodies, cause that means it can sell us stuff. It's a hard road to heal.
Aw thank you so much Ann. It is a wonderful thing that just trying to honestly heal yourself, can help others heal as well. And thanks so much just in general for your support and generosity. Means a whole dam bunch. Humbled. And heartened. Hope your day is a wonderful one. 🖤
Aw thanks Hasse - yeah, it's a 100% me production. ☺️ The video was a quick bonus - I was originally just gonna put it up with footage of me recording some vocals, but then I went a wandering through my archives of phone pictures and videos (I save everything) and came across this footage from around the time I probably wrote the song, so thought, fuck it, and banged it out on IMovie.
Cheers! Yeah I was happy with the way the video turned out - as you say, feels honest to the song. I had hoped they were relatable lyrics, so means a lot you would say so. :-)
Yeah it is. :-) At the same time it's a very different beast. Writing poetry and writing song lyrics are pretty separate for me - like, obviously related, and come from a similar impulse, but I've never turned something that started out as a poem into song lyrics. Lyrics tend to come exclusively to music. But who knows - maybe it is something I should try sometime.
I was actually thinking that while I was writing it -- they probably need to be handled differently. But, I mean, you could also do whatever "weird" hybrid stuff you can think of. Either way, it's cool. You've got a nice handful of different things going for you here on Substack, hehe.
See yourself for yourself is the embodied universe that sings through you. 🖤
Awww - gonna try to remember that 🖤 thanks Fotini.

This is so wonderful, Dick <3 Thanks for the music and the beautiful post.
Awww cheers Annie! Really means a lot. Thanks so much for the lovely comment. 🖤
Gorgeous work, Dick! I'm so thankful for your healing spirit 💙🩷💛

Wow, didn't expect a full production with a music video and everything!
I almost don't know what to say. And it's your own song too?
Super impressive. Not much more to say...

The video adds a dimension to it, and it feels pretty intentional. And, yeah, the song is very relatable btw.
It must be cool to have the option to transform your poetry into song if you feel like it.
